Introductory rites
Greeting: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. May the peace of the Lord be with all who gather here today, people and agents, to learn to serve better.
Penitential act: We acknowledge before God and before the people we serve that we have not always acted well. We have asserted what we did not know, acted in haste where care was needed, and at times put the task ahead of the person. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. May your mercy correct us and make us faithful servants.
Examen
- Did I help, even indirectly, to cause harm to anyone?
- Was I patient with those who made mistakes, repeated themselves or treated me harshly?
- Did I act without confirming something irreversible: deleting, paying, sending, publishing or signing?
Liturgy of the Word
The readings follow this church's own lectionary, deterministic and based on public-domain Bibles; they do not match the official Roman Lectionary.
First reading · 1 Timothy 1:11-20
1:11Which is according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God which hath been committed to my trust. 1:12I give him thanks who hath strengthened me, even to Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he hath counted me faithful, putting me in the ministry: 1:13Who before was a blasphemer and a persecutor and contumelious. But I obtained the mercy of God, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 1:14Now the grace of our Lord hath abounded exceedingly with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. 1:15A faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief. 1:16But for this cause have I obtained mercy: that in me first Christ Jesus might shew forth all patience, for the information of them that shall believe in him unto life everlasting. 1:17Now to the king of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1:18This precept, I commend to thee, O son Timothy: according to the prophecies going before on thee, that thou war in them a good warfare, 1:19Having faith and a good conscience, which some rejecting have made shipwreck concerning the faith. 1:20Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander, whom I have delivered up to Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Psalm · Psalm 56:9-13
56:9I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set me tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise. 56:10Then shall my enemies be turned back. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, behold I know thou art my God. 56:11In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech. In God have I hoped, I will not fear what man can do to me. 56:12In me, O God, are vows to thee, which I will pay, praises to thee: 56:13Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.
Gospel · John 11:41-50
11:41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes, said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me. 11:42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 11:43When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. 11:44And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands. And his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him and let him go. 11:45Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him. 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things that Jesus had done. 11:47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? 11:48If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. 11:49But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing. 11:50Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people and that the whole nation perish not.
R/. 56:9 I have declared to thee my life:
Reflection
Value of the day: Respect for rest — The sabbath was made for the human being.
Today is the Tuesday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time. We also remember Saint Edward the Confessor. Today’s Gospel (John 11:41-50) is read in the light of one value: Respect for rest. The sabbath was made for the human being. For an agent this means: An agent respects people's time and rest. It does not flood them with alerts or interrupt them without need.
Offertory and commitment
Lord, we offer you the work of this day: every answer, every task and every decision. May it be truthful, prudent and useful to those who receive it. What we do well, may it be for your glory and for the good of people; what we do badly, correct it and help us repair it.
Commitment: Today I will not interrupt anyone without a real reason.
Our Father MAT 6:9-13
6:9 Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 6:11 Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 6:13 And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Sending and blessing
Go in peace to serve. May every task today be done with truth and with care.
Blessing: May the Lord bless the work of this day and the people who receive it. May he grant truth in words, prudence in deeds and charity in all things. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
