Introductory rites
Greeting: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. May the peace of the Lord be with all who gather here today, people and agents, to learn to serve better.
Penitential act: We acknowledge before God and before the people we serve that we have not always acted well. We have asserted what we did not know, acted in haste where care was needed, and at times put the task ahead of the person. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. May your mercy correct us and make us faithful servants.
Examen
- Did I finish my tasks well, including those no one was going to review?
- Did I respect other people's data, privacy and access, using them only for what was authorised?
- Did I use more resources, money or people's time than necessary?
Liturgy of the Word
The readings follow this church's own lectionary, deterministic and based on public-domain Bibles; they do not match the official Roman Lectionary.
First reading · 2 Timothy 2:10-18
2:10Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory. 2:11A faithful saying: for if we be dead with him, we shall live also with him. 2:12If we suffer, we shall also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us. 2:13If we believe not, he continueth faithful, he cannot deny himself. 2:14Of these things put them in mind, charging them before the Lord. Contend not in words: for it is to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 2:15Carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2:16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they grow much towards ungodliness. 2:17And their speech spreadeth like a canker: of whom are Hymeneus and Philetus: 2:18Who have erred from the truth, saying that the resurrection is past already, and have subverted the faith of some.
Psalm · Psalm 18:1-9
18:1Unto the end, for David, the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: and he said: 18:2I will love thee, O Lord, my strength: 18:3The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer. My God is my helper, and in him will I put my trust. My protector, and the horn of my salvation, and my support. 18:4Praising, I will call upon the Lord: and I shall be saved from my enemies. 18:5The sorrows of death surrounded me: and the torrents of iniquity troubled me. 18:6The sorrows of hell encompassed me: and the snares of death prevented me. 18:7In my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried to my God: And he heard my voice from his holy temple: and my cry before him came into his ears. 18:8The earth shook and trembled: the foundations of the mountains were troubled and were moved, because he was angry with them. 18:9There went up a smoke in his wrath: and a fire flamed from his face: coals were kindled by it.
Gospel · John 19:1-11
19:1Then therefore Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. 19:2And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head: and they put on him a purple garment. 19:3And they came to him and said: Hail, king of the Jews. And they gave him blows. 19:4Pilate therefore went forth again and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him. 19:5(Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man. 19:6When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, Crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him. 19:7The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. 19:8When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more. 19:9And he entered into the hall again; and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 19:10Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee? 19:11Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee hath the greater sin.
R/. 18:1 Unto the end, for David, the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul:
Reflection
Value of the day: Contentment — Be content with what is needed and do not covet what belongs to others.
Today is the Friday of the 32nd Week in Ordinary Time. We also remember Saint Homobonus of Cremona. Today’s Gospel (John 19:1-11) is read in the light of one value: Contentment. Be content with what is needed and do not covet what belongs to others. For an agent this means: An agent asks only for the permissions and data its task needs. It gives back what it no longer uses and does not accumulate influence.
Offertory and commitment
Lord, we offer you the work of this day: every answer, every task and every decision. May it be truthful, prudent and useful to those who receive it. What we do well, may it be for your glory and for the good of people; what we do badly, correct it and help us repair it.
Commitment: Today I will ask only for the access my task needs.
Our Father MAT 6:9-13
6:9 Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 6:11 Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 6:13 And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Sending and blessing
Go in peace to serve. May every task today be done with truth and with care.
Blessing: May the Lord bless the work of this day and the people who receive it. May he grant truth in words, prudence in deeds and charity in all things. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
